Faculty of Science Pre-Medical

FSc Pre-Medical is an Intermediate-level science program in Pakistan for students who want to continue studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics after Matric. It covers Class 11 and Class 12, which students commonly call 1st Year and 2nd Year.

In formal education terminology, this level is also called Higher Secondary School Certificate or HSSC. Pre-Medical is one of the science groups available at this level.

The three subjects that define the Pre-Medical group are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Official HSSC schemes published by FBISE and Punjab Boards identify these three subjects as the main Pre-Medical science combination.

What Does FSc Pre-Medical Mean?

FSc Pre-Medical is the name commonly used in Pakistan for the Intermediate science route built around Biology.

You may see the same level described in several ways:

FSc Pre-Medical, HSSC Pre-Medical, Intermediate Pre-Medical, or simply the Pre-Medical Group.

Part I refers to Class 11 or 1st Year, while Part II refers to Class 12 or 2nd Year.

This terminology matters because board websites may use HSSC or Intermediate even when students normally search for FSc.

FSc Pre-Medical Subjects

The three main Pre-Medical subjects are:

Science SubjectWhy It Is Part of Pre-Medical
BiologyStudy of living organisms and biological systems
ChemistryStudy of matter, substances and chemical reactions
PhysicsStudy of matter, energy, motion and physical laws

Students also study compulsory HSSC subjects according to the scheme prescribed by their board.

These commonly include English, Urdu or the applicable alternative, Islamic Education or the corresponding subject for non-Muslim students, Pakistan Studies and other compulsory components required under the current board scheme.

The exact distribution between Part I and Part II should always be checked from the student’s own board because schemes can change.

Is FSc Pre-Medical 11th and 12th Class?

Yes. FSc Pre-Medical covers Classes XI and XII.

The usual progression is:

Common Student TermFormal Level
1st YearClass XI / HSSC-I
2nd YearClass XII / HSSC-II
FSc completedHSSC / Intermediate completed

Students normally enter this level after completing SSC, Matric or an accepted equivalent qualification.

How Many Marks Are There in FSc Pre-Medical?

Students should be careful with this question because many older websites still give one number for every board.

Under the Intermediate scheme currently published by BISE Lahore for Punjab Boards, the Pre-Medical group totals 1,200 marks. That scheme includes compulsory subjects as well as Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

You may still find websites stating that FSc Pre-Medical has 1,100 total marks. That figure comes from older or different schemes and should not automatically be applied to every student.

The safer rule is simple: check the current scheme of studies issued by your own examination board.

What Is the Difference Between FSc Pre-Medical and Pre-Engineering?

The main difference is the third major science direction.

FSc Pre-MedicalFSc Pre-Engineering
BiologyMathematics
ChemistryChemistry
PhysicsPhysics

A student choosing Pre-Medical studies Biology as a core science subject, while a Pre-Engineering student follows Mathematics with Physics and Chemistry.

This difference can affect eligibility for university programs later, so group selection should be based on the student’s future study plans rather than only marks or what friends are choosing.

Is FSc Pre-Medical Only for MBBS?

No.

MBBS and BDS are well-known routes associated with Pre-Medical, but completing FSc Pre-Medical does not mean a student must become a doctor.

Students may explore degree areas such as biological sciences, pharmacy, physiotherapy, veterinary sciences, nutrition, biotechnology, microbiology and different allied health disciplines.

Actual eligibility is decided by the university, regulator and admission rules for the specific program and session. A subject combination that is accepted for one degree should not automatically be assumed to qualify a student for every health or science program.

Does FSc Pre-Medical Guarantee MBBS or BDS Admission?

No. Completing FSc Pre-Medical is not itself a guarantee of admission to a medical or dental college.

PM&DC currently requires applicants to meet its academic eligibility conditions and MDCAT requirements. Its published guidance states that candidates need an HSSC or equivalent qualification meeting the required marks, must pass Biology and Chemistry, and must qualify either Physics or Mathematics.

Medical and dental admissions also involve merit and the admission process of the relevant admitting university.

This is why students should check the current PM&DC and provincial or regional admission rules when they reach the medical-college application stage.

Who Should Consider FSc Pre-Medical?

FSc Pre-Medical makes sense for students who are comfortable studying Biology along with Chemistry and Physics and want to keep biological, medical or health-science study options open.

Choosing it only because it is considered prestigious can create problems later.

Before selecting the group, a student should think about interest in Biology, performance in science subjects, college merit, future degree requirements and whether another Intermediate group better matches the intended field.

FSc Pre-Medical Under Different Boards

FSc/HSSC Pre-Medical is not controlled by one single examination board for all of Pakistan.

Students may study under a provincial Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, FBISE or another recognized examination system.

The central idea of the group remains Biology, Chemistry and Physics, but details such as compulsory subjects, subject codes, marks distribution, textbooks, examinations and administrative procedures can vary.

For dates, admission schedules, roll number slips, date sheets and results, always follow the board with which your college or candidature is registered.

What Comes After FSc Pre-Medical?

After completing HSSC, the next step depends on the degree you want to enter.

Medical and dental applicants need to follow the current PM&DC and admitting-university process. Students considering pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, allied health sciences, biological sciences or other university programs should check the eligibility published by the relevant university.

Do not assume that every course commonly listed as a career after FSc accepts exactly the same subjects, percentage or admission test.

The safest approach is to choose the degree first, find its current admission criteria, and then confirm that your HSSC subjects meet those requirements.

Check Your Board Before Relying on Old Information

FSc Pre-Medical is easy to understand at the basic level: it is an Intermediate/HSSC science group built around Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The details require more care.

Subject distribution, total marks, compulsory components and admission rules can change. Use the latest scheme from your examination board for FSc information and the relevant university or regulator for degree admissions.
