FA is one of Pakistan’s main Intermediate study pathways for students interested in humanities, languages, social sciences and related subjects. It is studied at Higher Secondary School Certificate level after Matric or an equivalent qualification.

FA normally covers two academic years. The first year is commonly called FA Part 1, HSSC-I, 1st Year or Class 11, while the second is called FA Part 2, HSSC-II, 2nd Year or Class 12.

One point matters before choosing subjects: FA does not have exactly the same subject combination across every Pakistani board and college. Students should check the current scheme of studies issued by their own examination board and the subjects actually offered by their college.

What Is FA in Pakistan?

FA is the commonly used name for the Intermediate Humanities or Arts stream in Pakistan.

It belongs to the Higher Secondary level of education, commonly known as Intermediate. Students normally enter this level after completing SSC, Matric or an accepted equivalent qualification.

The programme is particularly suitable for students who want to study humanities, languages, social sciences, education and related areas.

Official boards may use terms such as HSSC Humanities Group rather than relying only on the abbreviation FA. Because terminology differs between boards and institutions, students should treat the name FA as a commonly used educational label rather than assume every board uses exactly the same wording.

FA Part 1 and FA Part 2

FA normally takes two academic years to complete.

Students normally take their Part I examinations after the first year and Part II examinations after the second year according to the schedule issued by their examination board.

Result dates, roll number slips and date sheets are therefore board-specific. Students should use the page for their own BISE or FBISE rather than relying on a general FA page for examination dates.

Which Subjects Are Studied in FA?

FA usually contains compulsory subjects together with a selection of elective humanities or social-science subjects.

Common subjects found in Humanities schemes may include:

Are FA Subjects the Same Across Pakistan?

No.

Pakistan has several examination boards, and their schemes, terminology and permitted subject combinations can differ. Individual colleges may also offer only selected combinations from those permitted by their board.

For example, one college may offer Education, Civics and Islamic Studies, while another may offer Economics, Geography and Physical Education.

You should therefore check two things before taking admission:

1. the current Humanities or HSSC scheme published by your examination board
2. the FA subject combinations actually offered by your chosen college

This is especially important when selecting subjects for a future university programme.

Has the HSSC Scheme Changed?

Education schemes can change over time.

For example, the Federal Board introduced the Inclusive Scheme of Studies 2024 in stages. It was implemented for HSSC-I from academic session 2025 and HSSC-II from academic session 2026. Students who had already entered under the previous scheme were allowed to continue according to that scheme.

Because different students may therefore be studying under different schemes during a transition period, an old FA subject table should not automatically be treated as the current one.

Always check the scheme that applies to your own admission session.

Who Can Study FA?

FA is normally taken after Matric, SSC or an accepted equivalent qualification.

However, admission requirements are not identical everywhere.

A government college, private college or another institution may set its own merit level, subject requirements, application schedule and admission procedure within applicable board or education-department rules.

Students should therefore check the current admission notice of the college where they want to apply.

Is FA Only for Arts Students?

FA is mainly associated with humanities and social-science education, but the available subjects can be broader than the word Arts may suggest.

Depending on the board and institution, students may be able to study subjects such as Economics, Psychology, Education, Civics, Sociology, Statistics, Geography, languages, Fine Arts or other approved electives.

The better question is not simply whether FA is an Arts programme. It is:

Does the available FA subject combination prepare you for the degree you want to study later?

That should guide subject selection.

What Can You Study After FA?

Completing FA gives a student an HSSC-level qualification that can be used to apply for undergraduate education.

Possible fields may include areas such as:

Every university and degree programme can set its own eligibility conditions, required subjects, minimum marks, entry test or merit formula. Students should verify the current requirements of the university and programme they plan to join.

FA, FSc, ICS and ICom: What Is the Difference?

These are different Intermediate pathways.

The exact names and subject structures may differ between examination boards.

Students should choose according to the subjects they can study successfully and the admission requirements of the degree they want to pursue later.

How to Check Your FA Board Information

For examination-related information, first identify your board.

Then use the relevant board-specific source or Pakword page for:

Do not use an old result date, subject scheme or admission deadline simply because it appears on a general education website.

Board rules and examination schedules can change from one session to another.

Before Choosing FA Subjects

Your elective subjects can affect your later study options, so do not select them only because someone says they are easy.

Check the undergraduate programmes you may want to pursue after Intermediate. Then compare their eligibility requirements with the subject combinations available from your board and college.

If two colleges offer different FA combinations, choose after checking which combination fits your future plan better.

FA can provide a broad route into humanities and social-science education, but the right subject combination depends on the individual student, board and institution.
