Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT)

ECAT is the Combined Entrance Test conducted by the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore for engineering admissions in Punjab and for several undergraduate programs offered by UET where an entrance test is required.

For the Fall 2026 admission cycle, UET Lahore conducted multiple ECAT attempts. The second/final Fall 2026 phase has been completed, and its result was announced on June 30, 2026. Candidates who appeared more than once can have their best ECAT score considered during merit determination.

Students should remember one important point: appearing in ECAT and being eligible for admission are not the same thing. A candidate may be allowed to sit the test but must still meet the academic, domicile and program-specific requirements for the degree and admission category being selected.

What Is ECAT?

ECAT stands for the Combined Entrance Test in UET Lahore’s official admission system. It is commonly called UET ECAT or the engineering entry test by students.

UET Lahore has conducted the combined test for engineering admissions in Punjab since 1999. It is used for B.Sc. Engineering admissions and for computing, architecture and certain other undergraduate disciplines where UET requires ECAT.

ECAT should not be treated as one universal admission test for every engineering university or every degree in Pakistan. Requirements depend on the institution and program.

Who Conducts ECAT in Punjab?

The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore conducts the Combined Entrance Test for Punjab.

Students use UET’s ECAT system for registration, fee payment, application submission, admit cards and results according to the schedule announced for each admission cycle.

Dates and procedures can change from one cycle to another, so candidates should check the current UET announcement rather than relying on an old ECAT schedule.

Who Can Appear in ECAT?

UET states that anyone may take the entrance test. However, taking ECAT does not automatically make a candidate eligible for admission to an engineering institution or a particular UET degree.

Admission eligibility is checked separately.

A student therefore needs to consider two questions:

  1. Am I allowed to appear in ECAT?
  2. Do I meet the admission requirements of the program I want?

These are separate requirements.

Students awaiting their Intermediate or equivalent final result may also be able to sit the entrance test during the relevant admission cycle, subject to meeting the admission requirements later.

ECAT Subjects and Combinations

The ECAT test is based on Intermediate-level subjects. UET lists different combinations so candidates can select the one matching their academic background.

The current combinations include:

CombinationSubjects
1Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
2Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science
3Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
4Biology, Physics and Chemistry
5Mathematics, Statistics and Physics

English is also included in the test.

DAE-qualified candidates have more limited combinations. UET currently allows DAE candidates to select:

  • Physics, Mathematics, English and Chemistry
  • Physics, Mathematics, English and Computer Science

Candidates should select the combination allowed for their previous qualification rather than choosing subjects only on personal preference.

ECAT Test Pattern

The 2026 ECAT pattern published by UET is straightforward.

Test DetailECAT 2026
LevelIntermediate
Total questions100
English questions10
Other subject questions90
Test duration100 minutes
Marks for correct answer4
Negative markingNo
Passing thresholdNo ECAT passing threshold stated

The 90 non-English questions are divided equally among the other subjects in the candidate’s selected combination.

This means students should prepare according to their actual ECAT subject combination instead of following a single common syllabus for every candidate.

Is There Negative Marking in ECAT 2026?

No. UET states that ECAT 2026 does not have negative marking.

Each correct answer carries four marks. Candidates therefore do not lose marks for an incorrect answer under the published 2026 ECAT rules.

Students preparing for another admission year should still check the new UET notice because examination policies can change.

Is There a Passing Mark for ECAT?

UET’s current ECAT guidance says there is no passing threshold for any program in the entrance test itself.

That does not mean every score guarantees admission.

Admission depends on the merit calculation and the eligibility requirements of the program, campus and admission category. A higher ECAT score can therefore remain important even when there is no separate pass/fail threshold for the test.

Can You Take ECAT More Than Once?

Yes. UET provided multiple attempts for the Fall 2026 cycle.

Where a candidate has more than one valid ECAT result for the relevant admission cycle, UET states that the best score is considered for determining merit.

This gives students an opportunity to improve their performance without automatically losing the score from an earlier attempt.

Always check the current year’s policy because the number and timing of ECAT attempts are announced by UET for each admission cycle.

Which UET Programs Require ECAT?

ECAT is not required for every degree offered by UET Lahore.

For the 2026 admission cycle, ECAT-based programs include many engineering, computing, architecture and related degrees. Examples include:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Science
  • Architecture
  • Mechatronics and Control Engineering
  • Petroleum and Gas Engineering
  • Mining Engineering

The exact programs differ between UET Lahore and its campuses.

UET also lists non-ECAT programs. Candidates should therefore check the admission requirement for the exact degree and campus they want instead of assuming that every UET undergraduate program requires ECAT.

How the ECAT Process Works

The exact dates change, but the ECAT process normally follows the same basic order.

  1. Open the official UET ECAT portal.
  2. Generate the required challan or token.
  3. Pay the announced ECAT fee.
  4. Complete the online ECAT application.
  5. Download or print the admit card when UET releases it.
  6. Check the date, reporting time and examination centre printed on the admit card.
  7. Appear in the computer-based entrance test.
  8. Check the ECAT result through the official portal.
  9. Complete the separate undergraduate admission application if you want admission to UET.

The final step is easy to miss. An ECAT registration is not the same as an undergraduate admission application.

ECAT Admit Card and Photo ID

Candidates must bring their ECAT admit card to the examination centre.

UET also requires an acceptable original photo identification document. Depending on the candidate, accepted identification can include documents such as CNIC/NICOP, a NADRA Juvenile Card, passport or certain educational or domicile documents carrying a photograph.

Candidates should follow the identification requirements printed in the current UET instructions and on their admit card.

UET also advises candidates to reach their centre before the test begins. Mobile phones, calculators, books and notes are not allowed in the test hall under the published ECAT instructions.

ECAT 2026 Result

The Fall 2026 ECAT cycle included multiple attempts.

The second/final phase was conducted in June 2026, and UET announced its Phase II result on June 30, 2026.

Candidates can check an ECAT result through UET’s official ECAT system. Students who appeared in multiple permitted attempts should pay attention to UET’s best-score policy when completing their admission process.

ECAT result and university merit list are different things. Getting an ECAT score does not mean that a student has already received admission.

ECAT Result vs UET Merit List

An ECAT result tells you how you performed in the entrance test.

A merit list tells you whether your combined admission merit is high enough for a particular program, campus and admission category.

The merit process can consider academic qualifications and the ECAT component according to the admission policy for that cycle.

For this reason, students should not treat an ECAT score alone as their final admission result.

Where Should Students Check ECAT Updates?

For registration, admit cards, test instructions and ECAT results, students should use UET Lahore’s official ECAT system.

For undergraduate eligibility, degree requirements, application schedules and merit information, candidates should use the official UET admissions system.

Pakword is an independent education information website. It can explain the process and organize the important information, but students should verify time-sensitive dates and application requirements through UET before paying a fee or submitting an application.

What to Check Before Applying

Before starting an ECAT or UET application, confirm these five things:

  1. Your Intermediate, A-Level, DAE or equivalent background is suitable for the program.
  2. You have selected an allowed ECAT subject combination.
  3. The degree you want actually requires ECAT.
  4. You meet the separate admission eligibility requirements.
  5. You are following the current admission cycle rather than an old ECAT schedule.

These checks prevent a common mistake: preparing for the right test but applying under the wrong program requirements.
