Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D)

Pharm-D, formally called Doctor of Pharmacy, is a five-year professional pharmacy degree in Pakistan. Students usually enter the program after FSc Pre-Medical or an equivalent qualification.

Under the Higher Education Commission’s revised Pharm-D curriculum notified in 2025, the program is spread over 10 regular semesters. The basic admission requirement is HSSC/FSc Pre-Medical, or an equivalent qualification recognized through IBCC, with at least 60% cumulative marks.

That 60% figure is the basic eligibility requirement. It does not mean every student with 60% will automatically get admission. Universities can set merit criteria and may conduct their own admission test according to their approved admission policy.

What Is Pharm-D?

Doctor of Pharmacy is a professional degree focused on medicines, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy practice and the safe and effective use of medicines.

Students study how medicines are developed, formulated and manufactured, but the degree is not limited to medicine production. Modern pharmacy education also includes subjects connected with patients, hospitals, community pharmacies, drug safety and appropriate medicine use.

The Higher Education Commission revised the national Pharm-D curriculum in 2025. The updated framework places emphasis on pharmaceutical manufacturing, product development, pharmacotherapy, personalized medication planning, community and hospital pharmacy, professional communication, research and lifelong learning.

How Long Is Pharm-D in Pakistan?

Pharm-D is a five-year program.

Under the current HEC framework, these five years are normally divided into 10 regular semesters.

The revised curriculum requires a minimum of 195 credit hours when a student does not opt for a specialization track. Where an approved optional specialization is selected, the minimum may increase to 210 credit hours.

Students may still find university webpages showing slightly different credit-hour totals. Some of these pages reflect earlier curricula or institution-specific structures. Students applying now should check the curriculum and study plan currently followed by the university.

Who Can Apply for Pharm-D?

The basic HEC eligibility requirement is a Higher Secondary School Certificate involving 12 years of schooling in the Pre-Medical group, or an IBCC-equivalent qualification, with at least 60% cumulative marks.

For most Pakistani students, this means FSc Pre-Medical.

Students with an international qualification such as A Levels should check the required subject combination and obtain IBCC equivalence where applicable.

Meeting the minimum qualification makes you eligible to be considered. It does not guarantee admission because universities may have limited seats and separate merit rules.

Is an Entry Test Required for Pharm-D?

There is no single national rule saying that every Pharm-D applicant must pass the same entry test.

HEC’s revised curriculum allows the admitting university to decide whether it will conduct an admission test itself, use an external testing service, or admit students through another approved merit system.

This means one university may require a test while another may calculate merit differently.

Before applying, check the current prospectus or admission notice of the university you want to join. Do not rely on the admission procedure of another institution.

What Do Students Study in Pharm-D?

Pharm-D combines pharmaceutical science with pharmacy practice and healthcare-related learning.

Major areas normally include pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy and pharmacy practice. Students also study areas connected with drug formulation, pharmaceutical analysis, medicinal chemistry, microbiology, therapeutics, hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy and clinical pharmacy.

Practical laboratory work and professional training are important parts of pharmacy education. The exact semester-by-semester study plan can vary according to the approved curriculum adopted by the university.

The revised HEC framework also gives greater attention to modern pharmacy practice, rational medicine use, patient-focused pharmaceutical care, industry requirements, research and professional skills.

Is Pharm-D the Same as MBBS?

No.

Pharm-D and MBBS are different professional degrees.

An MBBS program prepares students for the medical profession. Pharm-D prepares students for the pharmacy profession, with its main academic focus on medicines, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice.

The word Doctor in Doctor of Pharmacy is part of the professional degree title. Students should not interpret Pharm-D as another name for MBBS.

Where Can Pharm-D Graduates Work?

Pharmacy graduates can work across several parts of the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Common areas include hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality control, quality assurance, research and development, regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical marketing and other medicine-related professional services.

The HEC curriculum also identifies pharmaceutical industry, healthcare practice, academia, research, innovation and related professional environments among the areas for which Pharm-D education develops knowledge and skills.

A degree does not guarantee employment in any particular organization or position. Actual opportunities depend on vacancies, professional requirements, registration, experience and employer criteria.

How Should You Choose a Pharm-D University?

Do not choose a university only because its advertisement says Pharm-D admissions are open.

First check whether the university or degree-awarding institution is recognized by HEC. You should also confirm the current status of the pharmacy program with the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan before paying admission or registration fees.

Then compare the current curriculum, laboratories, teaching facilities, hospital or clinical training arrangements, faculty, fee structure and admission policy.

This matters because admission rules and educational facilities can vary considerably between institutions.

Does Every University Have the Same Pharm-D Fee?

No.

There is no single Pharm-D fee for the whole of Pakistan.

Public and private universities set their own tuition and other charges under their applicable policies. Fees can also change between academic sessions.

For this reason, students should check the current prospectus or official fee schedule of the university where they intend to apply instead of relying on an old fee figure found through Google or social media.

What Is the Current Pharm-D Curriculum?

HEC formally notified a revised curriculum for Doctor of Pharmacy in September 2025.

The framework is aligned with HEC’s Undergraduate Education Policy and establishes the current national academic benchmark for universities offering the program.

For students, this means older articles describing Pharm-D only through the 2011 curriculum may no longer give the complete current picture.

When comparing universities, ask which curriculum is being followed for the intake you are joining.

Is Pharm-D a Good Choice After FSc Pre-Medical?

Pharm-D can be a suitable option for students who are genuinely interested in medicines, pharmaceutical science, laboratory work, healthcare and pharmacy practice.

The better question is not simply whether Pharm-D is good. It is whether the subjects and professional direction match your interests.

Before applying, review the course structure and the type of work pharmacists perform. A student interested mainly in becoming a medical doctor should understand that Pharm-D follows a different professional path from MBBS.

What Should You Check Before Applying?

Check the university’s current admission notice rather than depending on an old article or another university’s requirements.

Pay particular attention to your eligibility, merit formula, any admission test, application deadline, fee schedule and the recognition status of the institution and program.

National requirements give you the starting point. The university’s current admission notice tells you what you actually need to do for that specific intake.

Pharm-D in Pakistan: The Main Point

Pharm-D is a five-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree that prepares students for professional work involving medicines and pharmacy.

The current HEC framework sets the basic admission benchmark at 60% in FSc/HSSC Pre-Medical or an IBCC-equivalent qualification, with the program spread over 10 regular semesters and at least 195 credit hours without an optional specialization.

University admission procedures are not identical. Always check the current requirements of the institution where you want to apply and verify the program’s recognition before submitting fees.
