Technical Secondary School Certificate

Technical Matric, commonly called Matric-Tech, is a secondary education stream that combines normal school education with practical technical and vocational subjects. Students study it at the 9th and 10th class level, leading into the Secondary School Certificate structure.

The National Vocational and Technical Training Commission describes Matric-Tech as a third stream of education designed to bring technical and vocational training into formal schooling. Instead of studying only general academic subjects, students also learn a technical trade that can give them practical workplace skills.

FBISE currently includes Secondary School Certificate Grades IX–X [Matric-Tech] in its official Scheme of Studies and maintains dedicated technical education material for Matric-Tech students.

Is Technical Matric the Same as Matric-Tech?

Yes. In the context of Pakistan’s current federal education system, Technical Matric is commonly used as an informal name for Matric-Tech.

Matric-Tech is the wording used by organisations such as NAVTTC and the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education. Students may also see terms such as:

  • Matric Tech
  • SSC Matric-Tech
  • Technical Education Group
  • Technical Matric
  • Technical SSC

The exact name used by an institution can vary, so students should always check their board or school’s current admission and scheme-of-studies documents.

Which Classes Are Included in Matric-Tech?

Matric-Tech is studied at the secondary level in Grades 9 and 10.

FBISE’s current scheme specifically identifies it as:

Secondary School Certificate Grades IX–X [Matric-Tech].

This means it should not be confused with DAE, a short trade certificate, or an intermediate-level technical qualification. Those are different educational routes.

What Do Students Study in Technical Matric?

Technical Matric is not made up only of workshop or trade subjects. Students continue studying compulsory academic subjects while also taking technical subjects.

Under the current FBISE Matric-Tech scheme, the structure includes subjects such as:

Study Area Examples
Language Functional Urdu and Functional English
Religious studies Islamiat or relevant minority religious education
Quran/Ethics component Translation of Holy Quran or Ethics provisions where applicable
National studies Pakistan Studies
Mathematics Functional Mathematics
Technical study Trade Subject I and Trade Subject II
Additional study Elective Subject III

The current FBISE scheme gives the complete Matric-Tech program 1,200 marks across Grades IX and X.

Students should use the scheme issued for their own academic session because subject titles and curriculum arrangements can change.

Which Technical Trades Are Available?

The exact trades depend on the institution and education authority.

NAVTTC’s Matric-Tech program identifies eight high-demand pathways:

  • IoT and Data Coding
  • Industrial Electrician
  • Graphic Designing and Media Production
  • Plumbing and Solar Water Heating System
  • Fashion Designing and Dress Making
  • Professional Chef
  • Hair and Beauty Services
  • Tourism Expert

FBISE’s broader technical education material also shows SSC-level technical courses and groups covering areas such as Industrial Electrician, IoT and Data Coding, Professional Chef, Fashion Designing and Dress Making, Tourism, Hair and Beauty Services, Plumbing and technical medical fields.

This does not mean every school offers every trade. A student may have access only to the trades for which the institution has approval, teachers, laboratories and equipment.

How Is Matric-Tech Different From Ordinary Matric?

The main difference is the technical component.

A conventional Matric route mainly concentrates on academic subjects according to the student’s group. Matric-Tech keeps formal secondary education but adds structured technical learning.

Ordinary Matric Matric-Tech
Mainly academic secondary education Academic + technical education
Science/Humanities or other approved group Technical/trade-oriented stream
Limited occupational training inside normal syllabus Dedicated technical subjects
Primarily prepares for further academic study Designed to support both further education and practical skills

NAVTTC introduced Matric-Tech specifically to reduce the separation between formal schooling and technical skills. Government planning documents describe it as an alternative third stream of career education at secondary level.

Is Technical Matric the Same as a Vocational Course?

No.

This distinction matters.

A short vocational course may teach a skill such as electrician work, plumbing, graphic design or dress making, but completing such a course does not automatically mean a student has completed Matric-Tech.

Matric-Tech is a formal secondary education stream covering Grades 9 and 10.

The student studies academic compulsory subjects as well as technical subjects according to the applicable scheme.

A separate vocational certificate normally follows its own training and assessment system.

Is Matric-Tech Available Everywhere in Pakistan?

Students should check locally rather than assume that every school or education board offers it.

NAVTTC’s Matric-Tech initiative began as a pilot in selected public institutions involving Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The program was developed with partners including FBISE, the Federal Directorate of Education and relevant TVET and education departments.

FBISE currently maintains a dedicated Technical Education section containing Matric-Tech curricula and related academic material.

Availability can still depend on the institution, region, approved trade and academic session.

Before applying, ask the school or institution:

  1. Is the Matric-Tech group currently offered?
  2. Which board will register the student?
  3. Which trade is available?
  4. Are practical labs available?
  5. Which Grade 9 subjects will be registered?
  6. What is the current admission procedure?

Can You Continue Studying After Technical Matric?

Matric-Tech was designed to give students technical skills without closing the door to further education.

Government descriptions of the program state that students completing the secondary Matric-Tech route can have the option to enter the skills/job pathway or continue further studies.

The exact next qualification a student can enter, however, depends on the admission rules of the college, board, technical institute or university concerned.

Students should therefore verify eligibility for a specific next program before assuming that every intermediate or diploma route accepts every Matric-Tech combination.

What Is the Current FBISE Matric-Tech Scheme?

The current revised FBISE scheme places Matric-Tech within the SSC Grades IX–X framework.

One notable recent change is the introduction of functional subjects within the revised scheme. Federal curriculum material says Functional Urdu, Functional English and Functional Mathematics form part of the newer technical-stream arrangements, with implementation changes tied to the 2026–27 academic session.

This is why students should avoid using an old screenshot or an old subject list to select their Grade 9 subjects.

Always check the scheme that applies to your registration session.

Who Should Consider Matric-Tech?

Matric-Tech may suit a student who wants normal secondary education but also enjoys practical, skill-based learning.

For example, a student interested in electrical work may prefer Industrial Electrician. Another interested in computers could look at IoT and Data Coding, while students interested in hospitality, fashion, plumbing or media production may choose another available technical pathway.

The choice should depend on:

  • the student’s interest
  • availability of the trade
  • quality of practical facilities
  • recognition by the relevant board
  • options available after Matric
  • future study or employment goals

Do not select a trade simply because its name sounds modern. The actual training facilities and recognition matter more.

Where Should Students Verify Technical Matric Information?

For federal Matric-Tech information, students can check the FBISE Technical Education section and the current FBISE Scheme of Studies. NAVTTC also maintains information about the Matric-Tech program and its vocational pathways.

For admission at a particular school, the school or relevant education authority should confirm whether the desired trade is actually available.

Pakword is an independent information website and does not register students or conduct Matric-Tech examinations.
