Provincial Health Minister Resigns

Provincial Health Minister ResignsHealth Minister Punjab Tahir Khalil Sindhu Resigns

On Sunday, Tahir Khalil Sindhu resigned as provincial minister after he received an ‘insulting’ rebuke from Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Apparently the resigned minister felt severely indignant after the Chief Minister of Punjab censured the latter’s unsatisfactory performance on controlling and preventing dengue in the province. Following Sindhu’s resignation, it was rumored that special assistant to Chief Minister, Khawaja Salman Rafiq, may hold health office.

In order to clarify any confusion regarding the development, he stated that his resignation was due to the ‘insulting remarks’ Mr. Sharif made while questioning his efforts to control dengue in Punjab. Sindhu also added that his decision to resign was not instigated by the dengue case itself, but due to a separate contention. Whether or not his resignation was catalyzed by the scolding he received or the disagreement he mentioned to sources later on, it is obvious that work ethics are lacking in our governmental sector.

The complexity and urgency of issues within the province demand that ministers and workers execute their duties wholeheartedly, and take criticism as constructively as possible. This is not to let authoritative transgressions go under the radar, but the occasional snubbing should not be taken as the end of the world and a personal insult. This is not just any ministry; it supposedly handles the many affairs of health and prosperity in the environment of Punjab. Citizens deserve to be governed by individuals who place their professional duties and responsibilities above self-entitlement.

Sindhu’s resignation arrives at a critical time and simply reflects the lack of concern the ex-minister has. Given how dangerous and endemic dengue is increasingly becoming in Punjab, the health ministry could do with a competent minister who is dedicated to saving citizens from a disease that destroys lives, instead of protecting his ego.
